Italy’s 2026 Guide Signals a Generational Shift
The Michelin Guide Italy 2026 did more than crown a new three-star restaurant. Beneath the headlines, the selection revealed a country in the middle of a generational handover, with young chefs stepping firmly into the spotlight.
Two kitchens rose to two stars. Famiglia Rana, led by chef Francesco Sodano in Oppeano near Verona, and I Tenerumi, where chef Davide Guidara cooks on the volcanic island of Vulcano, both won their second star for distinctive, personal cooking. Guidara's vegetable-focused menus, in particular, have drawn attention well beyond Sicily.
The guide also added twenty-two new one-star restaurants, among them INEO in Rome and Cracco Portofino on the Ligurian coast. Strikingly, eight of the newly starred chefs are aged thirty-five or younger, a sign of how quickly talent is emerging across the peninsula.
In total, Italy's 2026 selection now counts 394 starred restaurants within a broader list of nearly two thousand recommended addresses. From the vineyards of Piedmont to the islands of the south, the picture is of a national cuisine that is both deeply rooted and restlessly creative, and of a new generation ready to carry it forward.
