My recipe for yeast cake with apple and simple and delicious crumble cake with applesauce. Cake recipe for a quick homemade sheet cake recipe. Apple crumble cake in winter also with cinnamon absolutely delicious conjured from simple ingredients. My simple recipe for a delicious sheet cake with dry yeast.
Apple crumble sheet cake is Apfelstreuselkuchen, the cake German bakeries sell by the piece all autumn. Yeast dough base, a layer of sliced tart apples, and thick butter Streusel on top — baked flat on a sheet pan rather than in a round tin.
The Streusel is what people remember, and the mistake is making it too fine. Work the butter, flour and sugar into pea-to-marble-sized clumps and stop; rubbed to sand it bakes into a crust rather than a crumble. Use tart apples that hold their shape — Granny Smith or Braeburn in the US — and slice them thin enough to soften in the same time the base needs. More autumn baking in our German recipes.
First, gently fold the yeast into the flour and stir gently.
Then add the sugar, medium eggs, milk, margarine (or butter), vanilla sugar and a pinch of salt.
Mix well with the stand mixer (dough hook) until a firm dough is formed.
Then let the dough rise for an hour (warm place - without drafts). Start 60 minutes timer here
The dough should have doubled in the meantime. Then spread on a baking sheet lined with baking paper (and baking frame).
Now preheat the oven to 200 °C.
Topping
Spread the entire package or jar of applesauce on the dough (you can also choose real apples or other fruit).
In a fresh mixing bowl, add flour, sugar, vanilla sugar, cinnamon and margarine and mix with a stand mixer (regular dough hook) until small balls are formed - add more flour if needed.
Spread crumbles over applesauce.
Now place the tray of crumble cake on the middle shelf in the oven and bake at 200 °C for about 30-40 minutes. Start 30 minutes timer here
Let the cake cool on the baking tray after baking (place the tray on a wire rack).
Tip Have fun re-baking my recipe for a delicious sheet cake and apple crumble cake with dry yeast and optional cinnamon.

Preparation and baking instructions for the yeast cake with apple
First, gently fold a sachet of yeast into the flour and stir gently.
Then add the sugar, the packet of vanilla sugar, the three medium eggs and the lukewarm milk, as well as the margarine (or butter) and salt.
Mix well with a mixer or food processor (dough hook) until a firm dough is formed.
Let the dough rise for about 1 hour (in a warm place without drafts – at room temperature).
The dough should have doubled in the meantime and then put it on a baking tray lined with baking paper and a baking frame.
Now preheat the oven to 200°C (top/bottom heat)
Spread the complete package/glass of applesauce evenly on the dough
For the crumbles now mix flour, sugar, vanilla sugar and soft margarine in a fresh mixing bowl until nice fluffy. In winter I like to add cinnamon to the crumbs
It is best to use a normal beater and optionally add some flour if the crumbles are too big.
Carefully spread the crumble over the applesauce
The sheet cake can now be baked in the oven on the middle shelf
bake the cake for 30-40 minutes at 200°C (top/bottom heat)
after baking, let the cake cool slowly on the tray
Bake yeast cake with apple and crumble easily as sheet cake recipe
Streusel cake or yeast cake with apple is and remains the best version for apple cake. So easy and delicious is our recipe with applesauce and yeast dough. It always tastes heavenly in combination and the cake stays moist. The crumble gives the yeast cake with apple a perfect light crunch.
Easy yeast cake with apple as a sheet cake recipe
I’m sharing with you my favorite recipe for a delicious sheet cake with dry yeast. Currently, this sheet cake recipe is my personal favorite cake, because it just always tastes delicious. It also always goes down well with guests, unfortunately you just can’t bake it quickly on the spur of the moment.
Streuselkuchen is a sheet cake that we always like to serve at family gatherings, because it tastes good to everyone and, depending on the season, can also be made with different fruits, such as cherries. Although the cake is made with yeast, it always turns out quickly and easily.
You don’t need complicated ingredients, but simple ingredients that are always needed in the kitchen and are always in stock at our house. Even if you don’t have applesauce in the house, you can bake the cake with just crumbles as a topping.
Especially with a yeast dough, I love using my food processor. The longer you knead the dough, the fluffier and softer the cake will be later. However, the longer kneading also adds gluten to the dough. Of course, you can also achieve the results with a hand mixer, but more relaxed here is of course the luxury of a food processor.
Personally, I like it when the sheet cake recipe is baked with applesauce as a topping, because then it is so really delicious and chewy. In winter I like to mix some cinnamon to the crumble, whereas in summer I prefer to eat the version without cinnamon.
The nice thing about yeast dough sheet cake recipes is that you can easily freeze them and they still taste fresh and delicious afterwards. In the summer, I like to serve a scoop of vanilla ice cream with the cake on warm days.
I’ll be happy to show you more variations of delicious and simple sheet cake recipes soon, which you can easily bake after. Some with yeast and some without yeast. Nothing tastes better with coffee than fresh cake that you have baked yourself. Regardless of whether you are expecting guests or just want to give yourself a treat.
Have fun trying them out!

Simple and delicious! This cake is so tender — can you use other fruit purées too?

Thank you so much, Doro. Yes, you can use other fruit purées or even chopped-up fruit. Though I’d leave out the cinnamon in that case, since it usually only pairs well with apples. A version with mango purée tastes really refreshing.

Thank you, Gitta — you can keep the cake in the fridge for about 3 days. It gets a little softer in there, but no less delicious. Otherwise it freezes really well; just let it thaw slowly and maybe pop it in the oven for a few minutes so it’s nice and warm again.

I tried your recipe and thought it was really delicious. I don’t bake much with yeast, but for sheet cakes I always find it so good. I did leave out the cinnamon, though, since it doesn’t quite fit the summer.
